Tara Holmes is a maker with an eye for the readymade. Encompassing the sensibilities of collage and appropriation she creates beautiful, unique pieces from carefully sourced objects. These elements, originating in junk shops, car boots and antique markets, are juxtaposed wittily to create unique intensely crafted pieces.
With an interest in fashion and art, and drawing inspiration from the likes of Nancy Rubins, Jessica Stockholder, Sarah Sze and Picasso, the work naturally took on a sculptural dynamic, culminating in collections which collate jewellery and wall-based pieces. At times the definitions are confused making for a free flowing and instinctive aesthetic approach.
A history of travel and transience, which saw her, enjoy parts of her childhood in Africa and mainland Europe drove Holmes' passion for reclamation. Travelling light for years meant that once settled she became a compulsive collector and maker, which is reflected in both her work and her home.
Living and working in Hackney, East London, she creates high quality fashion jewellery, sculptures and commissions, generally working in frenetic themed series, inspired by her 'finds'.
