mono is a succession of capsule series and projects which attempt to explore the spaces between art, craft, design and fashion aiming to redefine the categorical convention of these genres as well as their ideals, content, norms and expectations. The work stands for more than just a cycle of endless products and seasons, it is a stand against the complacency within the fashion ideal.
mono is situated on the west coast of Canada in Vancouver, British Columbia. Each item is either handcrafted in studio or locally produced. This affords the opportunity to oversee the quality control and working conditions.
Within the same year Heather Martin, designer of mono, went from student at Vancouver Communtiy College to teacher of design and textiles. Since 2005, mono has been building, paying close attention to the intricacies of craft methodology and how the public market relates to these notions. mono has worked in collaboration with select design companies and artists such as Douglas Coupland, Yumi Eto and the Lifetime Collective. Within the most recent collaboration, Clothe/Breathe, mono joined talents with a choreographer and a sound artist to create a performance installation. In 2008 mono was chosen, by Cause & Affect, as one of Vancouver’s top design firms and showcased at the Mover’s & Shaper’s exhibition featuring several design practices spanning varied disciplines.
mono has recently expanded into the International market, being featured at stores throughout Canada and the US including Portland, New York, Vancouver, Edmonton and Toronto.
